“Hold the line” – Rural place sinks in the stone era of mobile phones

Date:

That was entrepreneur Rainer Pfeiffer from Karlstein on Thaya (Lower Austria) too much when his mobile operator A1 offered him to switch to the 2G network mode for more smooth telephony-the technology comes from 1992! You almost see on the mobile phone masts, but the Czech network often has to be better there.

It was probably a mixture of despair, bewilderment and anger that energy consultant Rainer Pfeiffer drove to the public for a walk. Because as an entrepreneur in the countryside he hoped that he would at least be “well extensive” in larger places – such as Karlstein An der Thaya.

The most important city of the Waldviertel community with 1500 inhabitants not only houses the only HTL location in the Upper Waldviertel. The global automotive supplier Pollmann also has his head office there and has several hundred people at the location.

Teschnic solution from 1992
When Pfeiffer turned on his mobile operator A1 with the current reception problems, he was informed that there were no further optimization options and he should try to use the 2G network mode. “This standard for mobile phones was introduced in Germany in 1992 and is still mainly used for telephony. Mobile data is sent via GPRS or per Edge,” the energy adviser, who often has to do with mobile phone apps that require faster and more smooth connections in his trade. Also about the WLAN (“Voice over WiFi”), which also advises A1, there would be rough dropouts in the offices.

Czechs pay more attention to Waldviertler …
Even a delicate: “If I stand five houses in my mother’s kitchen, I get the Czech mobile phone network, but not the Austrian!” Peiffer chased, although the handling is almost in sight. “At least the Czechs take care of their people,” he has found cynically that A1 operates his “historically grown monopoly”: “Because there is no longer a private provider in these circumstances.”

A1: Regular tests in the country
“The aim of A1 is for everyone in Austria to benefit from a good range of mobile phones. This also applies in the rural area, where A1 is regularly tested,” answers spokesperson Martin Rohlik. Bottlenecks can still occur in certain areas.
