Three accidents took place within four days at the Mega -Building Place in the Brenner Basi Tunnel (BBT). Now it is extensively evaluated and additional security measures are also being implemented. As is known, the longest underground rail connection of the world for goods and passenger transport is created under the Brenner Pass. Work is done at this mega building site around the clock, even under extreme conditions. This is not only demonstrated by accidents in the past – about two fatal work accidents in the previous year – but also the current series of accidents: three serious accidents took place within four days – one of which also ended deadly.
Systematics in the case of accidents “not recognizable”
Is there an explanation for the series of accidents or is it a chain of unfortunate coincidences? The Brenner Base Tunnel is an extremely complex construction project with numerous technical, organizational and logistical challenges, explains BBT spokesperson Andreas Ambrosi in an interview with the “Krone”. “It is currently working on eight tunnels in an Austrian project area – four of them with tunnel drilling machines, the other four with explosive promotions. A total of 1200 employees work on the construction sites in Austria,” AmbroSi explains.
According to the BBT spokesperson, the recent accidents had taken place on two different building units during various activities. A system is “not recognizable”. In such cases, a crisis intervention team is always consulted.
The project company Brenner Basist Tunnel evaluates the current situation for all project participants and optimizes the processes where necessary. “There are already very high security standards in the BBT, but additional security measures are being implemented,” Ambrosi emphasizes.

The General Trade Union Association AGB/CGIL South Tyrols repeatedly speaks of “likely defects in work organization” in the course of employment accident on the Austrian side. What does the speaker say about these statements? “Unfortunately we cannot answer this question.”
