Four years ago, an 80-year-old was brutally attacked in her bed in Eastern Styria: initially unknown perpetrators beat the woman several times on the back of the head and stole her gold jewelry. Investigators from the Styrian Criminal Police Office quickly tracked down her caretaker. He denied the robbery and was acquitted. When the suspicion was confirmed, he was gone. He turned himself in to police on Tuesday. But he denies any connection to the crime.
On the night of May 11, the 80-year-old, who lived alone, was the victim of a burglary at her house in Preding near Weiz: the robbers rose via the balcony and a cut window to the upper floor. They overpowered the 80-year-old who was sleeping in the basement and fled with gold jewelry. However, it was not discovered until days later that the robbery had taken place, when a doctor discovered that the woman had hematomas.
Pfleger was immediately targeted
Surveys by robbery investigators soon revealed that one of the suspects was the 80-year-old’s then 29-year-old nurse. In October 2018, criminals arrested him in Steyr/Upper Austria. However, the Romanian did not confess. Further investigations against the 29-year-old, who was released from prison about two weeks later, led to an EU arrest warrant. The man was also suspected of having been involved in a similar case in Lower Austria.
Accomplice in custody in Romania
The caretaker’s 32-year-old accomplice was arrested in his native Romania in August 2019. He is suspected of committing the brutal act together with the 29-year-old. He is being held in Romania for numerous other offences. Since then, however, there has been no trace of the 29-year-old, who did not live in Austria and was never found in Romania.
Surprisingly asked, unknown
Tuesday afternoon, the 33-year-old was finally surprisedaccording to the police. The high search pressure and the consultation with his lawyer may have been decisive. However, when questioned, the man did not confess to the burglary or crime in Lower Austria. Nevertheless, on the orders of the Graz prosecutor’s office, he was admitted to the Graz-Jakomini prison and is incarcerated.
