According to the provisional figures, 62 people died in traffic accidents in Austria in the first three months of this year. That was eight dead more than in the first quarter of 2024, the mobility organization VCA reported Tuesday.
Most of the victims in road traffic were at the age of 21 in the lower Austria, where Tuesday morning on the southern Autobahn (A2) in the Nekirchen district demanded again four dead and several seriously and somewhat injured.
According to an analysis of the VCö, 45 percent more fatal traffic accidents took place in the second quarter in the second quarter than in the previous three months. Last year the number increased by 55 percent in the second quarter compared to the first quarter. One reason is the start of the motor season in the spring.
Reduce traffic – the goal has never been achieved so far
Austria had set itself the goal of reducing the number of road deaths to less than 312 in 2020, the Vcö remembered. Since then this has never been achieved in one year. According to the provisional data from the Ministry of the Interior, 349 people died in traffic accidents in 2024. For 2030, the goal is less than 207 road deaths.
According to VCö, Switzerland has registered 250 road deaths in the previous year compared to Austria. Austria can take an example in terms of safety, said VCA expert Katharina Jaschinsky. “For example, Switzerland has lower speed limits and also considerably lower tolerance when exceeding the limits.” The higher penalties also contribute to more discipline in road traffic.
Lower Austria for upper Austria and Styria
In the comparison of the federal state this year in the first quarter in Lower Austria, the most road deaths died, about nine more than in the comparison period 2024. In the upper Austria, eleven people died in traffic accidents, in Styria nine, in Tirol Six, in Vienna Vier, in Salzburg, Vorarlberg and Burgenland.
In 2024, 54 road deaths were taken after final figures in the months of January to March, 76 victims in the previous year, after 77 dead in the first quarter of 2022. 2021, 48 people died in traffic in the first three months, 69 road deaths were complained in 2020 and in 2019 there were 64 victims.
