Thousands of living animals are transported every day over long distances in Europe to be slaughtered. These long journeys mean enormous suffering for these animals and also serve to optimally use the capacities of the subsidized slaughterhouses, an insider reveals. A new legislative proposal in Brussels must ensure improvements.
Millions of farm animals are cried in narrow, overloaded trucks over large routes, often without enough water or feed. Many of them are exhausted, scared and injured – some do not even survive the test. But all this actually happens only because it is more profitable for the branch of the industry to venture for carts on the continent instead of slaughtering them near their place of origin.
Now there is finally a new legislative proposal from the EU committee to reduce this unspeakable suffering. But it is still unclear whether the majority of MPs will be in accordance with the reasonable proposal – for example through shorter transport times. There is a lot of money in the background, because the “Meat Forwarders” earn powerful every kilometer.
For hours of perseverance in the van
Animals are often transported 20, 30 or even more hours – even when breaks are taken, the animals stay on the van when the heat or freezing of cold glows. The new regulation is intended to limit the travel time for slaughter to nine o’clock, but this will make massive long -distance transports. This is a thorn in the side of some!
In the “Kroon” conversation with the green EU mandate Thomas Waitz, it quickly becomes clear what is really needed. Huge financing has been built in recent decades. Of course they have to come to their usage figures, so that the corresponding profit is also overlooking. Regional, smaller slaughterhouses were gradually moved.
More needs to be slaughtered than we can eat
“These EU subsidies have contributed to a massive concentration on the battle market. For example, it happens that a large company imports extra pigs from Denmark to achieve his goals,” said Waitz.
The production of pork in Austria would almost be required and we would not have to get our schnitzel -meat from abroad! The majority of import pigs that are slaughtered in Austria ends as cheap meat in our gastronomy. The high -quality pork from home is exported abroad again.
The cruel transports do not always end in European slaughterhouses. Thousands of animals are exported to third countries, where they are slaughtered in a completely uncontrolled way – often without anesthesia, under the cruelest circumstances. The Greens are calling for a ban on such exports, but the new bill continues to allow these bloody journeys.
Sea transport: Weekly suffering – without any control
It is especially shocking that the transport time at sea is still not officially counted as a travel time. This means that animals must end up on busy ships for an infinitely long time- without access to fresh water, on smooth floors dirty with droppings. Many break their legs, starve or thirst slowly. Ships full of living animals that ride through Rough Lake for days – a nightmare that occurs over and over again.
Destroy: Cattle lose their eyesight on board
“There are also no uniform standards for shipping transports in the EU. In Ireland, for example, only the latest ships may be used. It looks different in the ports of Spain, Croatia or Romania,” reports Mandatar Waitz of the “Krone”.
On scrap tires – also called “soul seller” – the bare horror is on the hands of the animals. While the sea breeze causes fresh air on the upper floors, the droppings of the cattle collect in the parking spaces in the belly of the ship. The poisonous gas ensures that the animals are blindly disembarking.
When will it finally be traded?
As long as living animal transports are allowed more than thousands of kilometers, the lake of emaciated boats do not count as travel time and as long as animals outside the EU die in uncontrolled slaughterhouses, the system remains cruel and inhumane.
It costs more than small reforms – it requires real change. A change that does not treat animals like purely goods, but as a feelings that feel pain and fear. The millions of animals that suffer from the streets and seas in Europe every year earn more than that. They deserve protection – and they need it now.
The coming vote in Brussels will show how important the Austrian envoy of all factions is this subject. . .
