Government confirmed – Serbia: Vucic re-elected in first round

Date:

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic secured a new term in office during the first round of presidential elections on Sunday. That’s according to a prediction from the non-governmental Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CESID) published late that evening. Vucic received 59.3 percent of the vote. In the parliamentary elections, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) defeated Vucic with 43 percent of the vote.

The prognosis was based on a count of more than three-fifths of the vote. Vucic’s fiercest opponent, Zdravko Ponos, received 17.4 percent of the vote.

Government camp still with a large majority
The alliance of the opposition United for the Victory of Serbia party, which Ponos founded, came second in the parliamentary elections with 12.8 percent. The co-governing socialists received 11.6 percent. The government camp thus still has a solid majority in the Serbian parliament.

The alliance of environmental groups and some smaller parties of the left-wing center “We must” received 4.3 percent of the vote. Three other parties to the right – Nada, Dveri and Zavetnici – won parliament with 5.4 percent, four percent and 3.9 percent of the vote respectively.

Since 2012, Vucic has been in charge of Serbian politics in various roles. He had combined the parliamentary and presidential elections to ensure his supremacy.
