Two Chinese citizens were captured in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk – while apparently they fought on the side of Russian troops. This was announced by the Ukrainian President Wolodyymyr Senskyj on social media.
The two men were therefore admitted with full ID documents, bank cards and other personal objects. You are currently in custody of the Ukrainian security service SBU. It cannot be independently checked whether the two are actually Chinese or not from North Korea.
Senskyj: “Gives much more than just two”
Senskyj has announced that intensive investigations are now underway. “We have information that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupancy units than just two,” he said. The Ukrainian secret service and other military units are also involved in the investigation.
At the same time, the president ordered that the Ukrainian Foreign Minister should immediately contact the Chinese government to clarify their attitude in this case.
Political explosives between Beijing, Moscow and Kyiv
The arrest of Chinese citizens provides considerable diplomatic explosiveness. “The participation of China in this war – directly or indirectly – is a clear signal that Putin will do everything separately from the war,” said Senskyj. “The world must respond to this – the United States, Europe and everyone who wants peace.”
So far, China has officially positioned itself in the Ukraine war. It clearly prevents the Russian invasion and calls for peace negotiations instead. In a twelve-point plan of February 2023, China argued for a ceasefire, but criticized Western sanctions and left a matter of guilt. At the same time, since the start of the war, China and Russia have further intensified their economic and strategic relationships.
So far no proof of China’s direct intervention
Western intelligence services accuse China of indirect Russia, for example through the delivery of micro-electronics and so-called “dual-use” goods, ie civil technology that can also be used in the military field. So far, however, there has been no confirmed evidence of direct military support from Chinese troops.
The arrest of Chinese citizens in the Russian uniform could change this image – should the allegations confirm.
North -Korea as a direct military supporter Moscow
In contrast to China, on the other hand, North Korea has long appeared as a military supporter in Russia. According to Western Secret Services and Ukraine, Pyöngjang has supplied artillery core and ballistic rockets since 2022 million. A defense agreement between Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin offers mutual help with an attack from June 2024.
Since October 2024, more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers would have been sent to Russia, partly close to Ukraine. These troops can be actively involved in fighting there. In exchange, Noord -Korea clearly receives Russian support in the form of food, fuel and possibly technology for its rocket program.
