A Russian of all people won this year’s Air Guitar World Championship, themed “Make Air, Not War”. The 2015 world champion, also known as “Gitarantula”, who competes for France, triumphed over seven opponents in the final in the Finnish city of Oulo.
The competition is about playing an imaginary guitar on a piece of music. The World Cup is part of the August festival in the region of music, art, literature and performance in Oulo and has been held since 1996. The World Cup was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the corona pandemic.
Winner: “Positive energy for viewers”
The motto of the competition: “Make Air, Not War” – make air, not war. “Our belief is that if everyone played air guitar, no one would be able to hold a gun,” organizer Anna-Kaisa Kettunen said, according to broadcaster Yle. Winner Kirill Blumenkrants emphasized: “We want to have fun on stage and produce positive energy for the spectators.” He met good friends at the tournament, he said. “I hope we keep the air guitar world championship alive for as long as possible, especially in these dark times,” said Blumenkrants.
In the final round, the participants played the song “Zitti di buoni” by Italian ESC winner Måneskin in front of no fewer than 3,500 spectators. Behind Blumenkrants, another representative from France, Frederic “French Kiss” Reau, came in second. Germans were not in the final.
