Date:

A truck lost a large block of granite, causing it to hit a bus, causing it to lose control. The bus has caught fire. It is estimated that 45 people traveled in it. 13 survivors have been taken to health centers.

At least 37 people have died in the early hours of this Saturday in a spectacular accident involving a bus, a truck and another vehicle in the state of Minas Gerais, in the center of Brazil.

Initially, firefighters reported 22 deaths, a figure that has increased as the work to rescue the bodies continued. Some of them were “charred and caught between irons.”

The Federal Highway Police has explained that the number of casualties is “preliminary” because the firework activated makes identification tasks difficult.

The driver of the bus, in which it is estimated that approximately 45 passengers traveled, has lost control on a section of the BR-116 highway as it passes through the municipality of Teófilo Otoni.

According to the version of the Federal Highway Police, the loss of control occurred dAfter a “large block of granite” fell from a truck that was passing by at the time and hit the bus, which caught fire and was completely destroyed.

Next, another vehicle driving behind it collided with the truck transporting the granite. His three passengers survived, albeit with “serious injuries.”

Another 13 survivors from the bus were taken to nearby hospitals.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed “immense” regret for what happened, expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and said he is praying for the recovery of the injured.

“The Federal Government places itself at the disposal of the Municipal Council of Teófilo Otoni and the Government of Minas Gerais for whatever is necessary,” he declared on social networks.

Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema has assured that he has ordered the “total mobilization” of the regional executive and stressed that security forces have been working “continuously” since dawn to tackle the incident “with agility” .
