The Danish couple of Flemming Hansen and Mette Helbæk, once a celebrated founder of Stedsan’s Eco-Resort in the forest in southern Sweden, apparently fled to Guatemala. According to media reports, the couple, which has long been celebrated in social media, left his property in the forest of Halland – together with debts, left -wing animals and 158 barrels of human faeces.
The forest resort advertised as “magical” and “luxurious natural” consisted of 16 wooden huts and attracted influencers and international guests. The operators, previously familiar with a roof restaurant in Copenhagen, left the Danish capital in 2016 – according to their own information because of a high tax burden and bureaucracy – and settled in Sweden, where they founded Stedsans.
Unstable legacies
However, according to the joint investigation of the newspapers “Days Nyheter” and “Politics”, the mountain of Debt also increased in Sweden. In total, their obligations to the Swedish tax authorities must be around 6 million seconds (around 550,000 euros). Even before Christmas 2024, they officially reported their place of residence abroad – shortly thereafter, Stedsans was declared bankrupt in March 2025.
The inheritances on site caused horror among the local authorities. In addition to insufficient waste water removal, waste water ran unfiltered in the forest, various animals – including ducks – died because they were omitted outside at night. Others just stayed behind when the couple left the country.
Daniel Helsing, environmental officer of the Hylte District, spoke in an interview with Dagens Nyheter about a clear case of “environmental crime”. His sober conclusion: “Voilà. More than 150 barrels of human sch … ..”
Entrepreneurs see themselves as a bureaucracy victim
In a message on their website, Hansen and Helbæk explained:
“We got very far with Stedsans, but we had to see that it is impossible to survive as a entrepreneur driven by the soul in a country with one of the highest tax burden and ruthless bureaucracy.”
It also says: “If you read this, we were probably already declared bankrupt by the Swedish tax authorities. Everything we wanted was to contribute to a nicer world.”
Started with a new hotel project
In the meantime, the two have started a new hotel project in Guatemala. At the request of the days of Nyheter, Flemming Hansen denied violations of dealing with animals. He described the Swedish tax authorities as a “narcissistic entity” and said that he was now “convicted of a life in poverty”.
The Danish and Swedish tax authorities did not want to comment on the leaves with reference to confidentiality. Until now, the statements of the two entrepreneurs were also being treated.
