Don’t campaign: the former US first lady publishes the memoir ‘Melania’.

Date:

Four weeks before the American presidential elections, former First Lady Melania Trump’s memoirs will be published on Tuesday. Her clear support for the right to abortion caused a stir during previous newspaper publications.

Her husband Donald Trump, who is running again on November 5, played a key role in ensuring that the Supreme Court overturned abortion rights nationwide two years ago by appointing three conservative justices during his term.

Melania Trump, who has been married to him since 2005, has largely stayed out of his election campaign.

The blurb of the English edition (available from October 22, 2024), which only has the white letters ‘Melania’ on a black background, says: ‘In her memoir, Melania reflects on her Slovenian childhood, the defining moments that brought her into the world of the haute couture in Europe and New York and the chance meeting with Donald Trump that changed her life forever. Melania talks about her life in the spotlight and the joy of motherhood. She talks behind the scenes about her time in the White House and provides insight into her work as a lawyer and the issues close to her heart.”

In her memoirs, she explains, among other things, that abortion is “a woman’s fundamental right to individual freedom” – completely contrary to the party line of her husband’s party.

“Limiting a woman’s right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is like denying her control over her own body.” That is her lifelong belief.

Challenge to election campaign strategy?
Political observers see the development as a possible challenge to Donald Trump’s election campaign strategy. The discrepancy between the Trump couple’s positions could call into question the Republican nominee’s credibility and give Democrats new points of attack.
