Scenes like those in an action blockbuster took place between Rankweil and Bludenz in Vorarlberg on Thursday. A 40-year-old man first caused a commotion in front of the Rankweil State Hospital and then fled in his car. A chase ensued in which several police officers were injured.
The chronology of an escalation in stages: On Thursday, it was reported at the Rankweil police station that a visibly angry man from the Bludenz region had called the Rankweil regional hospital and threatened to visit the hospital – armed with stones. The threat was also taken seriously because the 40-year-old had previously been released from hospital. When they arrived on the scene, the police initially waited in vain for the ‘stone thrower’.
Shortly after their departure, however, the next emergency call came from the hospital: the man was now there, they said – and he had brought stones with him, as announced. A police patrol found the rager on site and immediately confronted him. However, he immediately fled: he got into his car and sped away. A police officer tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle.
Police officers had to jump out of the way
What followed was a chase that seemed straight out of an action movie script: the man simply raced past the first roadblock in the form of two police cars blocking the road – the officers stationed there had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
Then the hellish journey continued towards Feldkirch, with two police cars in tow. The gunman repeatedly hit the brakes. As a result, the immediately following emergency car crashed into the back of the getaway car.
And it got even wilder: When a police car tried to overtake the 40-year-old’s car, the 40-year-old’s car simply rammed the company car. Shortly afterwards he hit the brakes again, causing another collision – with both police vehicles. The man also broke through two other roadblocks: one in Feldkirch and one in Frastanz.
Then, however, the crazy journey came to a spectacular end: in Bludesch the fugitive again tried to ram a police car that overtook him off the road. However, during the collision he lost control of his car and crashed into a stream bed. Shortly afterwards the handcuffs clicked. The result of the chase: four injured police officers and three destroyed emergency vehicles.
What exactly made the man so angry is now the subject of investigation. Either way, the incident will have serious consequences for him.
