Collaboration with Acips – Graz University in the fight against extremism

The new collaboration of the University of Graz with the Acips highlights the role of secret services and false reports and its effects on society. For the first time this leads to anchoring of intelligence studies at an Austrian university.

On Tuesday the starting signal for the new collaboration between the University of Graz and the Austrian Center for Intelligence, Propaganda and Security Studies (ACIPS) was given. The scientific research of secret and intelligence services is anchored for the first time at an Austrian university.

In addition to the research projects into the SO -Fair Intelligence Studies, courses also include courses, conferences and active exchange with authorities, media and civil society.

Secret services, extremism and security
Gabriele Schmölzer, dean of the Faculty of Law, explains: “Intellligence Studies touch fundamental questions. With this collaboration we create the interdisciplinary basis to investigate these topics from the area of ​​security and extremism research at the University of Graz and to make scientifically healthy results visible.”

Research into intelligence studies, for example, must deal with increasing radicalization and clarify which factors are decisive, but also investigate the influence of conscious fake news.

Important for safety in Austria
Sylvia Mayer also sees this the need for as deputy director of the management for state protection and intelligence service: “A fact -based argument is crucial, both for prevention and strategic recognition of constitutional protection -relevant trends. This collaboration is an important step to further improve safety in Austria.”

Jeremy Stöhs, deputy director of ACIPSS, also agrees: “Safety questions are never black and white. They require context and historical depth. This requires research without an alarm, but with a clear look.”
