A major police operation in the center of Graz caused a stir on Thursday afternoon: the Mehlplatz was cordoned off by heavily armed officers. Reason: a telephone threat, including that firearms were involved, could not be ruled out.
The Mehlplatz, just meters from the Herrengasse, was closed to passers-by on Thursday afternoon: heavily armed police officers guarded the square and the Cobra task force, the Rapid Intervention Group and the South Negotiation Group were also on the scene.
The trigger was a threat that, according to the initial information, a person had made on the phone. Firearms could not initially be ruled out either.
There is no danger to the population, the police reassured. The mission was recently called off. No weapons were found.
