Animal rights activists are delighted – how whales help worldwide economic problems

Date:

The global economic unrest has no disadvantages everywhere: this year the whale vessel will fail in Iceland.

Fish and whale fishing have played an important role in Iceland for centuries. In the past two decades, however, tourism has become more important for the island state, which also contributes to the tourism of whale observation.

The employees of the only whaling company Hvalur have already been informed about the failure, the Omroep RUV reported on its website on Saturday. Hvalur Baas Kristjan Loftsson was quoted with the explanation that his company sees no other way to “stay on the quay and wait for better times”.

The company operates the only active whaling ship in Island. “The situation will be checked again in the coming year,” said Loftsson. Hvalur had not searched the whale last year.

The demand for whale meat from Iceland fell drastically
Since Japan, the largest whale -meat market, has resumed commercial whaling in 2019 after a 30 -year -old break, the demand for whaling from Iceland has fallen drastically. In addition to Iceland and Japan, only Norway allows the catch of whales, which is heavily criticized by animal rights activists. The cancellation of this year’s season in Iceland will save “countless whales and death,” said Wendy Higgins of the Animal Welfare Organization Humane World for Animals. Walfang is “a brutal and meaningless yacht without moral or scientific justification”.
