Necessity is the mother of invention: for lack of heavy weapons, Ukrainian mechanics are now turning old cars into combat vehicles in the fight against Russia. Once the redesign is complete, the vehicles will be sent to the battlefield as soon as possible. They are mainly used for reconnaissance.
At a workshop in Zaporizhzhya, southern Ukraine, mechanics are hard at work converting old rally cars into vehicles that can be used in battles against Russian troops on the front lines. They’re swapping mufflers, removing sports tuning, and changing interiors to make vehicles smaller — all overseen by businessman Volodymyr Tarkhov (see video).
Cars are sent forward
Dozens of vehicles have been converted in Tarchow’s workshop since the beginning of the war. That’s what they come for
Lighting for use. “Our goal is to make the vehicle a little quieter, so it’s less noticeable and unnoticed in our locations,” explains Tarchow. After that, the cars are sent to the combat zone as quickly as possible.
The armored cars are picked up by soldiers and taken to their positions at the front. “We are going to work there, for the good of our people,” explains one soldier. Especially volunteers buy many of these special combat vehicles.
