Gif Green instead of crystal clear: the otherwise clean water on the popular beach of Bang Saen in the Thai province of Chonburi turns into a greenish broth. The cause was a strong plankton blossom that scared tourists – but experts give it all kinds.
The unusually dense blossom of the microscopic small algae species Noctiluca Scintillans not only explained the sea green, but also led to an unpleasant odor and, according to the local authorities, water quality. Some beach visitors then decided to end their bathing course prematurely or to avoid neighboring coastal cities such as Pattaya.
Cause: Inputs of hot water and nutrients
Sea biologists from the University of the Burapha made high water temperatures and raised entries with nutrients that are possible by waste water-responsible for the natural phenomenon. Such flowers occur regularly and are usually limited.
Although no health zone effects have become known, the authorities advised caution for caution. With a very high plankton concentration, the oxygen content in the water can fall, which can potentially be dangerous for marine animals and sensitive people.
No fear of long -term consequences
The authorities expect the water to normalize again in the coming days. Plankton flowers of this kind are visually annoying, but according to the experts, neither new nor in the long term are threatening. It is rather a recurring natural phenomenon that is influenced by ecological balance and climatic conditions.
