A court in Moscow sentenced three journalists and a journalist to five and a half years in prison. They would have worked for the forbidden organization of the Kremlin critic Alexej Nawalny. This is considered extremist in Russia.
The trial against the convicted Antonina Faworskaya, Sergej Karelin, Konstantin Gabow and Artjom Kriger has been running behind closed doors since October. They rejected the statement of belonging to an extremist organization.
Nawalny, the most prominent opponent of ruler Vladimir Putin, died in a prison camp on the Arctic Circle in February 2024. Shortly after his funeral in Moscow, the journalist was arrested. She had documented the long human snakes in the grave for the independent medium “Sotavision”. Before that she had reported almost all processes against Nawalny, but never worked for her organization, according to the medium.
Kriger is also an employee of “Sotavision”, Gabow and Karelin worked for various media, including the Deutsche Welle. They are accused of having delivered material for the later forbidden video channel “Nawalny Live”. “With the verdict against the four journalists, Russia shows with all the hardness that it is an ignoring bank,” said DW director Peter Limbourg. “The Russian regime tries to bend facts with all my power – and brings courageous journalists as serious criminals in court.”
Judge for the defender of Nawalny
The Russian authorities continue with all the people who were connected to him and his work after the death of Nawalny. In January, three lawyers were convicted of storage that had defended him. Nawalny’s widow Julia and other colleague campaigners continue with opposition work from exile. They continue to publish videos about spectacular cases of enrichment and corruption in the Russian elite.
