The president of the Austrian officers Society, Erich Cibulka, wants to think about a conscription for women. Moreover, the military military service must be again performed for all soldiers, he says.
You could “think very innovative and not limit service to male citizens. So introduce a conscription for women,” Cibulka told the “press”. Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) recently rejected this idea with regard to the lack of equality between the sexes. Women can currently be able to provide voluntary basic service.
Six months without exercises too little
For Cibulka, six months of basic military service are not enough without exercises. The expert committee can therefore think about an “Austrian year” for all citizens. “For example, the military service would be divided into eight months basic services and four months. Exercises would be four months of exercises: 120 days. If you practice ten days each year, you have done it in twelve years, that is usually done at the age of 30,” he explains.
He also proposes to cover the number of basic military servants according to military needs. “This pot of the military necessity was filled in a first step with volunteers and in a second step with the most suitable non -volunteers.” If you do not do a military service, you must make the services to the community, the president of the Austrian officer company said.
A federal association of experts will check whether the currently six months of fundamental military service should be reformed by autumn.
