For years, the defendant made his wife’s life hell. The man’s frenzy to check escalated in front of Vienna’s Pilgramgasse metro station. At his first trial, he was acquitted of attempted murder. The new sentence: 15 years in prison for attempted murder.
The man (52) had months to think about his actions and his responsibilities. Because he stood before a jury for attempted murder for publicly attacking his wife with a knife at the Pilgram Bridge in Vienna. The trial had to be repeated because the lay judges were not asked about possible bodily harm – they denied the attempted murder charge at the time.
Morbid compulsion to control
“My client lives up to his responsibility”, lawyer Astrid Wagner almost had to sigh. He certainly did not want to kill his wife, “but he who loves must be jealous”. He is the latter in a degree of delusion, complete with a morbid compulsion to control. For 20 years he tormented his wife – a woman from Vienna. Mounted cameras for surveillance in the apartment. Installed a location app on her phone. She locked her in the apartment when he went to his original homeland of Serbia. “Hot-blooded and aggressive”, that’s how his own son described him.
“Painful Revenge”
In the summer of 2021, the woman filed for divorce and experienced sheer terror. “Painful revenge” he wanted to practice. He did that on August 19 last year: he stabbed her in the Pilgrambrücke metro station. Passers-by came to the rescue, she survived wounded, but according to legal expert Christian Reiter without serious physical consequences.
The jury verdict is finally here: 15 years in prison for attempted murder. The verdict is not final.
