In many places, Easter is not only celebrated religiously – there are also wild habits that go even further than the most extraordinary ideas. From “Roosteren” from Judas to “Water Fighting”. Even Donald Trump is regularly “on fire” in one country. The “Kroon” is looking for the most bizarre Easter customs in Austria.
Although eggs are mainly sought in this country and chocolate rolls are nibbling, it is much wilder elsewhere: marching in Spain through the streets, in Mexico, Donald Trump is symbolically burned, water flies in streams in Poland, and in the Czech Republic there is even an explosion with the rod.
“Semana Santa” and the Ku Klux Klan -look
In Madrid and other Spanish cities, the “Semana Santa” (Holy Week) has a special figure: marching in long, pointed caps and white robes that the KU Klux clan can remember, the whole thing has nothing to do with racism.
The “Nazaros”, as this procession is called, represent a deep -rooted religious ritual in which they symbolize the suffering of Christ. It is a habit that is deeply anchored in Spanish culture and is celebrated with respect, even if it is considered shocking by outsiders.
Quema de Judas: Donald Trump goes up in flames
In Mexico, Easter is also the time of the “Quema de Judas”, in which people burn dolls of hated personalities. Donald Trump has often obtained this glorious honor in recent years – as a symbol of resistance to his politics.
The custom comes from the tradition of burning Judas, which stands for betrayal of Jesus. In Mexico, however, this is often associated with current political characters such as modern social criticism. Traditionally the big burning race starts at noon.
Waterstress in Poland
Unlike Mexico, the fire brigade comes in Poland – but wet. There the “śmigus Dyngus” is celebrated, a Splash Water Festival, in which young men and women in particular pour themselves with water. The habit is mainly associated with fertility and health.
“Beat” with Wilg branches
In parts of the Czech Republic and Slovakia it is pretty medieval at Easter: men are knocking women with decorated branches of grassland on their ass and legs, known as “Pomlázka” in the region. This tradition is said to bring happiness and beauty. The men are usually “rewarded” with a painted egg or a Schnapps.
It is not as wild as in Mexico or Poland in this country – but there are also a few sloping customs in Austria.
