A tragedy is currently taking place in the Pacific for South California: more and more marine mammals – sick or already dead. The reason: a huge, toxic algae blossom that has never been there, which is preferred by unusually high temperatures of the seawater.
“We have an unprecedented harmful algae blossom off the coast of Los Angeles, actually off the coast of South California,” reports Dave Bader of the Marine Mammal Care Center in Los Angeles. “It is the fourth year in a row with such a flower … and the fact that it takes nine, almost ten weeks is longer than we have experienced in the past.”
You get thousands of phone calls about sick animals that need help, says Bader. Veterinarians and rescue teams are hopelessly overloaded, the number of poisoning is increasing. According to the marine biologist, the warming of the oceans is the fault for the oceans.
Animals die from a nerve poison
“The suffering of the animals and the beaches that we observe in connection with this algae blossom are absolutely heartbreaking,” says veterinarian Alissa Deming. Whales, dolphins, sea lions and pelicans are mainly affected. Many of them die from domoe acid, a nerve poison produced by single -celled red or pebbles. Animal rights activists currently provide more than 100 poisoned animals.
The massive algae blossom is favored by unusually warm zewater – one of the many consequences of climate change. The authorities urgently warn beach visitors about approaching injuries or confused animals because they can become aggressive due to poisoning.
GIF makes sea lions unpredictable
In the case of sea lions, poisoning with domoe acid leads to memory disorders, disorientation and damage to the central nervous system. As a result, the animals can no longer swim and the behavior of the animals becomes unpredictable according to experts.
Animals can get better again
“If you are treated on time, you have a chance of 50 to 65 percent to get better again,” said the head of the Marine Mammal Care in Los Angeles, John Warner, the English broadcaster BBC.
