Despite sanctions – Nord Stream: Canada now wants to supply the turbine

Date:

Many European countries are eagerly awaiting the maintenance of the Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 1, which will start next week. As reported, the gas flow will be completely shut down during the approximately two-week work. Missing parts can also cause problems. A repaired turbine is currently located in Canada. However, this cannot be supplied to Russia due to the sanctions imposed by the West. Is the West now breaking its own sanctions so that the gas supply in Europe is not further affected?

In fact it seems. According to Reuters news agency, the Canadian government is apparently ready to hand over the turbine to Gazprom. The German government in particular had vehemently requested it. It is argued in Berlin that the Russian government should not be given an excuse to cut off the gas supply to Europe by pointing to the missing turbine.

Scholz: Putin takes the arguments
Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on the ZDF “Maybrit Illner” program on Thursday evening that it was a political decision in Moscow and the technical reason was put forward. If the turbine can be put back into service, the Russian government will no longer be able to refer to the alleged technical problem.

According to the Ministry of Energy in Kiev, the Ukrainian government is against the delivery of the turbine. “The sanctions prohibit the transfer of gas-related equipment,” it said. Representations will be made to other European governments. Russian gas will be delivered to the west not only through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, whose maintenance will begin in a few days, but also through Ukraine.
