With a huge explosion in a port in the south of Iran, more than 400 people were injured on Saturday. The incident took place in the largest trading gate in the country. The explosion was also heard in neighboring cities. TV photos showed black smoke columns above the port area.
“406 people were injured and hundreds brought to hospitals in the area,” said State Television on Saturday, referring to local rescue workers. After the “massive explosion” a fire broke out in the port of Schahid Radschee in the province of Hormusgan.
The cause of the explosion is still unclear. The head of the Crisis Management Authorities, Mehrdad Hassansadeh, told the state of television that various containers in the port had exploded. The area around the scene of the accident was evacuated.
The port city on the Persian Gulf is one of the most important economic zones in the country, in which more than a third of the Iranian Seehandel are handled.
