A study by the European Trade Union Institute (ENUI) annually writes 6190 deaths in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom for diseases related to work stress and adds another 4843 dead by suicide related to labor depression.
Werkstress kills around 10,000 people in Europe every year, both for coronary heart conditions that are due to psychosocial risks on work and suicide staring with regard to labor depression, according to a study that has been announced by the Institute of the European Union (ENUI).
The study attributes 6190 annual deaths in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom for diseases related to work stress and adds another 4843 people who lose their lives in suicide related to labor depression.
“This means that psychosocial risks pose a greater danger to employees than physical accidents, which caused 3286 deaths in the EU in 2022,” said the European Confederation of trade unions in a released statement that coincided with the international day in memory of deceased employees.
This platform added that “working women are disproportionately affected by psychosocial risks such as long working days, uncertainty in employment and intimidation in the workplace.”
The Union Confederation has added that there is also “a geographical imbalance”, because there is “a higher prevalence of deaths related to work stress in Central, East and Southeastern Europe.”
The study emphasizes that these deaths are “avoidable and that tackling them would enable companies and governments to save tens of billions of euros every year”, so the European Confederation of Trade Unions urged the European Commission to present a guideline on psychosocial risks as part of the quality jobs.
