Nothing and nobody is sure of the jokes of US President Donald Trump-not even the Catholic Church. When asked who he would like to see as the next pope, Trump said on Tuesday in the White House for Reporters: “I would like to be a pope. That would be my first choice.”
The 78-year-old added: “No, I don’t know. I have no preference.” There is an American cardinal “who happens to come from a place called New York and is very good”.
US Cardinal was a possible pope candidate
Trump probably referred to the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, without mentioning his name. Already in 2013 the conservative was considered a possible candidate for the successor of the then Pope Benedict XVI. After the death of Pope Francis, the Roman Catholic Church is only about to determine a new head. The conclave of the cardinals to vote begins on 7 May.
Trump was raised in the faith of the Presbyterian church. As a non-Catholic, he is excluded for the papal office. At the funeral service for Pope Francis in Rome, the US President caused a sensation: instead of wearing a black suit as prescribed, he noticed with a naval plan.
