In the Bolaring scheme in the Taxham district of Salzburg, residents actively act against plans to set up a care center, including for drug addicts. They are afraid of dangers for children. You also see the community in danger – in a settlement that is struggling.
“We don’t want this here!” Residents and parents of kindergarten children in the Salzburg Bolaring Settlement are in turmoil. Why? The pension house there has been empty since 2022. There are plans to house a house for the mentally ill and for addicts. In a settlement that the affected and residents themselves call “hotspot for socially weaker”.
Nicole Steurer is one of them. She is a member of the parents of the kindergarten of her son’s nursery school and says: “I moved here because here are generally drug problems. Now addicts have to withdraw. I see a great danger for the children.”
The doctor Ersan Saydam is also against the project: “Many people live here with a migration background. It is a socially weak settlement. Such a house makes everyone who lives here.”
Built up a good community for years
Someone who has lived in the Bolaring settlement next to the Europark has been Jürgen Tula since 1999. He says: “We have built a great community here. More than 1000 people live here who take care of each other.” The planned facility is also a thorn in the side: “If addicts are really added here, I see a great danger to our community.”
Something is clear in conversations with the residents: they all feel poorly informed. “We are told by the city, then from the country, then always something else. We don’t know what to believe. Once addicted people have to withdraw, an emergency sleeping place should come for homeless people.”
The residents are aware that addicts or homeless people must be helped. But: “To accommodate the whole thing in a settlement where it is already difficult, that is dangerous.”
