For nine months, Turtle Leonardo had disappeared without a track – his owners in Ulverston, Cumbria (England), had almost given up hope. But then the animal suddenly appeared again, in a place where nobody had expected.
The British turtle Leonardo was found about 1.6 kilometers from home after nine months. The animal had escaped from the garden of its owners in July last year. Despite the intensive search, the owners already seemed to be superfluous with the worst, Leonardo.

But now the surprising turn: a dog owner discovered the turtle while she walked over the street. Thanks to a social media campaign, Leonardo was brought to the pet store “Little Beasties Ulverston”, where the employees could finally find his owner Rachel Etches.
“It was my fault. We had just had our second child in the garden. I was distracted and lost sight of Leonardo,” Ett told the BBC.
“Turtles are very adventurous beings”
Leonardo had previously lived a protected life under a heat lamp for 13 years. His owners therefore did not believe that he would survive his first winter outdoors. Apart from a painful eye, the turtle remained intact. Etsen and the pet shop assume that Leonardo wins from the end of September to March and only left with the higher temperatures.
A few years ago Leonardo had disappeared for a short time, but was quickly recovered at the time. “Turtles are very adventurous beings, they always test the boundaries of their environment,” says Etsen.
