Illegal fireworks cost the young man his life in the Baden district on New Year’s Eve. His three friends are now on trial for wrongful death and aggravated assault.
“That was the biggest nonsense we ever did,” admit the three defendants in the regional court in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria). This “nonsense” killed her 23-year-old boyfriend!
To celebrate the New Year, the young men bought fireworks in the Czech Republic – a bullet bomb, which they illegally brought across the border.

Then at midnight everything went wrong. The fireworks exploded while being lit. The lighter was held by the 23-year-old, who died instantly. Two of the three defendants, who now have to answer for manslaughter, were injured. “I miss him every day,” says a young man sadly. However, as members of the volunteer fire brigade, they should have known better, the prosecutor reproached them.
Only allowed with a pyrotechnic pass
The ball bomb was a category F4 fireworks and can really only be ignited with a fireworks pass. The verdict: 12, 10 and 8 months conditional.
