The Ministry of the Interior published the preliminary asylum statistics until the end of June 2022. The number of applications in the first four months has more than doubled compared to the same period last year. Most applications were submitted by Afghan citizens. The statistics do not include those displaced by war from Ukraine, as they are covered by the EU’s “Temporary Protection” Directive and are currently allowed to reside and work in Austria legally and without applying for asylum.
31,050 people have in the period from From January to June 2022, there were 10,867 asylum applications in Austria in the same period of the previous year. The majority of these, ie 26,585, concern initial applications. Most asylum applications were made by Afghans (7325), followed by Syrians (6680) and Tunisians (3810), Pakistan (3110) and India (2025). However, the last three are still considered safe countries of origin, so the chances of staying are slim.
Most are young men
The majority of applications are still submitted by young men, in the first half of 2022 only 2015 applications were submitted by women. Asylum seekers must make the individual persecution in their home country credible. Possible reasons for asylum are persecution because of ethnic origin, religion, nationality, membership of a social group or because of political opinion.
Measured by the number of asylum applications, Austria is in fifth place in Europe, in the same period more applications were received in Germany (51,540), France (34,035), Spain (28,665) and Italy (17,865). The main escape route continues to lead to Austria via Serbia and Hungary. The Ministry of the Interior emphasized that clear action will be taken against asylum abuse, social fraud and smuggling.
