North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has confirmed his willingness to deploy nuclear deterrence. “I reiterate that North Korea is ready for any military confrontation with the United States,” Kim said on Thursday.
Any attempt by South Korea to preemptively weaken the North would also be met with a stern response and “annihilation,” it said.
Despite international sanctions, North Korea has been testing hypersonic missiles and missiles in recent months, which it claims can carry tactical nuclear weapons. South Korea and the US fear the country could also test nuclear weapons for the first time since 2017, given the stalled denuclearization negotiations.
