Sam died of febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES), which is thought to be an extremely rare reaction to a common virus such as the common cold or influenza. In March of last year, he was hospitalized after suffering a growing series of debilitating and ultimately disastrous attacks.
He had no history of seizures before. Experts from all over the world fought to save Sam’s life, but only seven weeks later he died at the hands of his parents.

“I remember sitting in my car crying tears of joy when I heard Sam was born and three days later he was enjoying my first cuddle with Sam,” Rhiannon said. “We were so happy to welcome Sam into the family and so proud to have him with us for five very precious years.”
“He was a very special child, full of kindness, love and awe and fascinated by the beauty of the world around him. His loss left a huge hole in our lives, but I know he is very proud of what his mom and his team at Sam’s Superheroes are doing.
“Although Sam lived in the derby, he had happy hours with his family here in Blackpool, and although Sunday’s event is Sam’s superhero event, with many of the superhero activities and crafts he enjoyed, there we realized it was important. All proceeds are donated locally. We hope that many families will come out of Kerkham and Fisham on Sunday.”
