Russian ruler Vladimir Putin has threatened far-reaching consequences for the West if sanctions against his country are extended. “Continued application of sanctions policies could lead to even more serious, without exaggeration, even catastrophic consequences for the global energy market,” Putin said Friday during a meeting with government officials, according to the Interfax agency.
In response to Russia’s war against Ukraine, the European Union has adopted far-reaching sanctions, including an embargo on Russian oil. Again Putin spoke of an “economic blitzkrieg” in the West that had failed.
Sanctions “harm our economy”
Yet this time he admitted: “These actions, the restrictions are damaging to our economy, and many risks remain.” For example, the Kremlin chief said Russian companies should prepare for the oil embargo and diversify when it comes to exporting energy resources.
Putin still ready to fight
On Thursday, Putin openly threatened to escalate his military aggression. “Today we hear that they want to defeat us on the battlefield. What can I say? Let them try,” he said in Moscow on Thursday. Everyone should know that Russia has not really started in Ukraine yet.
He accused the West of wanting to fight “to the last Ukrainian”. “This is a tragedy for the Ukrainian people,” the warlord said crocodile tears for the country he attacked.
Russia threatens ‘measures’
Also in the dispute about the transit ban for certain goods in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, war sounds from Moscow came to the fore. “If the situation does not stabilize in the coming days, Russia will take tough measures against Lithuania and the European Union,” said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday.
