With a thunderous roar, Burgenland Energie demolished three old generators in the Potzneusiedl wind farm on Friday in a spectacular way. Instead, next-generation installations are now being built.
Burgenland Energie understands ‘repowering’ as replacing existing older wind turbines with generators of the latest generation, which are considerably more powerful. Simply put, this means that more electricity can be produced with fewer wind turbines. That is why three old installations in the Potzneusiedl wind farm were blown up on Friday to make way for new wind energy generators.
It took a lot of effort to carry out this project. First the rotor blades had to be removed. After that, a demolition expert calculated all the details and gave instructions for digging the so-called pitfall, that is, the area into which the tower fell in a controlled manner after the explosive charge, which weighed about seven kilograms, was activated.
Wind force decisive factor
The preparatory work took a total of two weeks. “The weather, especially the wind, was carefully monitored in advance,” says Burgenland Energie. For safety reasons, blasting is only possible up to a wind force of nine Beaufort, which corresponds to about 75 to 88 kilometers per hour. Friday’s upcoming storm nearly thwarted plans. That is why the demolition planned for 1:00 PM had to be brought forward to 11:30 AM.
After firefighters and police had cleared the security area of 300 meters around the towers, Stephan Sharma, CEO of Burgenland Energie, set off the first explosive charge. Sustainability is a top priority: the demolition material is crushed, steel and concrete are separated, the recycled material is used for the substructure of paths and crane locations.
