In the avalanche gallery on the Kreuztratte on the Plöckenpass in Carinthia, a tractor with hay bales on the trailer suddenly caught fire on Thursday afternoon.
The volunteer fire brigade of Kötschach-Mauthen was immediately on site and completely engulfed the tractor in flames. Due to the enormous heat and smoke development, the extinguishing activities could only be carried out with heavy respiratory protection. In addition, another tank pump had to receive a follow-up alarm.

The fire brigades Kötschach-Mauthen, Würmlach and Reisach were able to bring the fire under control after some time, but the fire caused damage of almost 400,000 euros. And there are other problems: the fire may have affected the statics of the tunnel. An expert will assess the damage and only then reopen the road to traffic. In any case, the tunnel will remain closed to all traffic until Friday afternoon.
Update: According to information from the municipality of Kötschach-Mauthen, the avalanche gallery has been open to traffic since 12 noon.
