Unacceptable situation – “In gastronomy, a lot is in trouble!”

Date:

The hospitality industry is urgently looking for staff. But the conditions are often unreasonable. The Vienna Chamber of Labor is now sounding the alarm. Because the solution to the industry’s problems is not more seasonal jobs, but better conditions and fair wages for workers.

The gastronomy has almost no staff anymore. And that’s not surprising either. The catering industry has been in first place for years when it comes to personal consultation in the Chamber of Commerce. In Vienna alone, there were 1,280 calls in the first half of this year. This shows that something is wrong in gastronomy. “The numerous labor law violations described are not isolated. The problems are symptomatic for the industry,” says AK’s Bianca Steppwieser.

Laws are not respected
The most common problems are poor working conditions, unpaid overtime, low, late or no pay, incorrect pay slips and unpaid sick leave and vacation days. “It would be a good start if the legal provisions are finally complied with,” says Steppwieser. As numerous cases prove.

lay off for vacation
Waitress Silke B. works 70 hours a week, she is only free on Mondays. Overtime is not paid, nor are holidays or sick leave. Particularly perfidious: before the holiday starts, the employees are fired and waive any financial claims. You will be hired again after the holidays.

Exploitation is the order of the day
Kitchen hand Andy K. was working in a restaurant when it suddenly closed. He was not informed, neither deregistered nor paid. The boss was in hiding and K. couldn’t look for a new job because he was still registered.

According to the AK, urgent supervision of these black sheep and sanctions are needed to make working in gastronomy tasty again.
