Train malfunctions in Spain – Stolen Copper Cable: 10,000 travelers stranded

Thousands of train travelers have to tolerate delays in Spain on Sunday because the theft of copper cables had partially paralyzed the high-speed network of Ave Railway. At least 30 trains and more than 10,700 passengers were hit.

The Spanish railway infrastructure (ADIF) reports in four places between Madrid and Sevilla, reports on Monday. The theft, which took place at the end of Sunday, concerned dozens of trains that had traveled between Madrid and Andalusia, just when many people wanted to return to the capital after a holiday weekend.

Significant delays on trains
“Because of the disruption in the track circuits, which was caused by the theft of a cable on the section between Mora and Orgaz, Madrid-Seville and Sevilla-Madrid trains, because they cannot ride their usual speed,” Adif (formerly Twitter) wrote and posted photos of the cut copper cable. In an interview with the Spanish radio station RNE, the president of the Spanish railway company Renfe of the State said that the normal timetable is expected until Monday morning.

At the train station of Madrid Bahnhof Atocha, the crowds pressed travelers on Monday morning to find out their trains with the current departure times. Renfe therefore advised travelers not to become too early to avoid another crowd at the train stations.
