Although he himself had cancer, the American mountaineer Alexander Pancoe wanted to collect donations for the blood cancer program of a children’s hospital in Chicago with an expedition. As is now known, the 39-year-old died in his attempt to climb the Makalu in Nepal.
The adventurer “did not feel good” and was degraded to a camp for acclimatization, the director of the Mountain Tour organizer Himalayan guides Nepal, Iswari Paudel, said Monday. Pancoe finally died on the Berg on Sunday evening.
The 39-year-old, who survived a brain tumor years ago, was an experienced mountaineer. He had successfully participated in the explorers Grand Slam. The highest points are climbed on all seven continents. Moreover, the participants have to drive to the North Pole and the South Pole with skis.
Tour “Hard without any disease”
Pancoe recently struggled against chronic bone marrow cancer. He wanted to climb the 8485 meter high Makalu to collect donations for the blood cancer program of a children’s hospital in Chicago. “It will be a big challenge for me,” the 39-year-old had written on his website in advance.
“Climbing at this height is quite difficult without a chronic illness, but I look forward to the challenge,” he said.
There are eight of the ten highest mountains in the world in Nepal, including Mount Everest. Last month an Australian died in relegation of the Himalaya Mountain Ama Dablam in Nepal.
