An as yet unknown woman pretended to be a court officer on the phone with a 90-year-old woman from Görtschitztal (Carinthia) and demanded 80,000 euros from her, otherwise her daughter would have to be arrested.
“The 90-year-old received a call at noon on Friday from a woman posing as a court officer telling her that her daughter was involved in a car accident involving an expensive vehicle,” said a police officer. The court would need a payment of 80,000 euros, otherwise the daughter would be arrested.
Messenger came to raise money
Then a woman – short in stature, no further description of the person available because the woman’s face was covered with an FFP2 mask – went to the 90-year-old’s address to collect the money.
Bank manager could have prevented worse
The messenger demanded another 10,000 euros from the woman. “They wanted to go to the bank to withdraw the money they wanted.” However, the attentive bank manager informed the woman’s son and prevented her from withdrawing the money. “Whether money was handed over for the bank visit is still the subject of investigation.”
End the call immediately
Such attempts at fraud are currently increasing in Carinthia. The police therefore advises: “Stop such calls immediately. Do not start a conversation and if necessary call the police!”
