Mega-building place-hospital Demolition is in the hot phase

Date:

The house A of the University Hospital in St. Pölten, which is no longer required, has been removed for a year. It is currently the tallest building that dismantles throughout Austria. A parking space in the area must then be made.

Nine floors, 225,000 cubic meters of space, 54,000 square meters of gross floor area: it is a construction site of superlatives that have been in full swing for about a year in St. Pöltner University Hospital. The special thing: it’s a demolition. And not Elke: “It is currently the biggest dismantling of buildings in Austria,” explains project manager Reinhard Reischl from Marchart.

Precise cut instead of heavy device
In particular, it is about Het Oude Huis A, which is no longer necessary after moving to the new clinic building. It has been working on it since June 2024. First of all, the building was separated from the house B that continued to operate. The directly adjacent parts of the building were not separated with heavy equipment, but precisely cut by concrete and removed with the tap little by little. About 15,000 cubic meters of building material were removed in this way.

Lots of asbestos
Because of their age, many pollutants such as asbestos and tar -containing materials had to be removed. “Up to 100 specialists were busy about six months,” Reischl explains. Then the mechanical dismantling began – among other things, the current largest demolition drains in the country are being used. “With a range of 40 meters it reaches the highest parts of the building,” said the project manager.

The above disassembly must be completed in September. The basement will then be removed in March 2026 before the area is converted into a park.

In terms of sustainability you also want to set new standards at the Mega -Building site. “92 percent of the approximately 150,000 tons of demolition materials are recycled and used,” Reischl assures.
