The National Council has shortened the Deadline for the prohibition on full column floors in pig agriculture. These are now forbidden from half past 2034. Loud criticism comes from the greens and animal rights activists who do not accuse the government.
There will be exceptions for so -called hardships. The “crown” has already been reported. That means: for companies that invested in new stables between June 2018 and December 2022, there should be an individual transition period of 16 years. All political groups-limited for the Greens-Endaard to the entire column ban.
Previous had an acquaintance of the VFGH, which evaluated the transitional period that was defined by the ÖVP and the Greens in 2040.
The criticism of the Greens, who saw the idea of animal welfare, wiped SP Mandatar Rudolf Silvan from the table. After all, there is now a transitional period that ends at the last minute in 2038 and therefore for the regulation decided by the Greens themselves.
“Good solution” and calm doubts
From the Neos side, MP Christoph Pramhofer emphasized that the farmers also need legal certainty, as it existed now. Otherwise you could not invest. For the Farmers’ Association, Member of Parliament Josef Hechenberger said that there would very well be an increased norm for animal welfare. Moreover, the quality of care is protected with Austrian pork.
The FPö, who suspected, expressed skepticism that a number of pig farmers would now give up. Meat from other countries in which the standards are lower would be consumed than in this country.
Health secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig (Spö) saw a “good solution”. The shortening of the transition period up to nine years affects 97 percent of companies and brings many pigs more animal welfare.
Criticism of greens and animal rights activists
Olga Voglauer, the spokeswoman for animal welfare of the greens, sees the prohibition a “Hush-Botch Regulation” that would not help animals or farmers. This would be used to make full split floors.
“This is still a complete column floor, only with fewer columns on a third of the stable area.” The government is on its shoulders that a “adult pig has a meter long and ten centimeters wide stripes more space-that is less than a DIN A3 leaf and just grotesque”.
Animal rights activists are also not convinced. The association against animal factories protested for the parliament that the new regulation was only for an eye. What it would be necessary would be a mandatory straw nest. In the new law, only a minimum standard of how pigs should be kept only sought. “It is afraid that it takes decades for pigs to finally get straw. Apparently you do this to St. Nimmerleinag,” said Voglauer.
