“Even a single day with extreme heat can increase the risk of serious pregnancy complications,” said Kristina Dahl of the American organization Climate Central. The analysis shows: heating days on which the temperature exceeds the local historical peak values worldwide – also in Austria.
In Austria there are an average of 27 such hot days a year – 17 more than without a man -made climate change. Nowadays the risk of premature birth increases.
Heat days have doubled since 2020
In 90 percent of the 247 countries and regions investigated, the number of dangerous hot days has at least doubled since 2020. In a third, the extreme heat even lasts a month longer than without climate change.
Pregnant women are mainly affected in regions with poor health care, eg B. in parts of the Caribbean, South -America, Southeast -Asia or Africa south of the Sahara.
In addition to heat, other climate effects such as flooding also restore additional risks – for example due to limited access to medical care.
