Two seasons, 18 videos, 28 scientific topics and more than 700,000 views only on YouTube: science is so exciting since the previous year in the course of the domestic ÖAW project “Fäkt!”. For the first birthday there is also a farewell and new beginning.
How much electricity does artificial intelligence need? How do you become a history professional with PC games? And how do I recognize conspiracy theories on the internet? With “Fäkt!”, The Science Education Project of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Öaw), the descendants get answers from researchers from all over Austria: brutally prepared in clips and reels in all social media.
The fact that science does not have to be old, or stiff and stiff and incomprehensible, shows “Fäkt!” In this way for a year. And is the format coming? Yes, initiator Andreas Berthal knows: “Fitters! Is stable”, the young people are feedback.
Two seasons with 18 videos, including associated material for secondary level I and a total of 28 scientific topics for the “Fäkt!” Lessons! ” Produced in this first year.
Local researchers from a wide range of areas, from the scientist from 2023, Andrea Fischer, were through top chemist Nuno Maulide, Zweren Woordexpert Oksana Havryliv and Bat specialist Rym Nouioua to Nobel Prize winners Anton Zeilinger.
The third season is already in production, further topics and films are planned. The “Fäkt!” Videos 700,000 times were only called on the YouTube internet platform.
And from the researchers who have to apply for a “fitty!” Scot came more than 100 submissions.
New moderator in the young women’s team
For the first birthday, “Fäkt!” Also offspring on the hip moderator side: Zujulia Winkler is now the 17-year-old Jafait Lemo. Currently still mature, jafait will “pick up!” displayed in the “Gen Z” and “Gen Alpha”.
You will not see much of the brutal “miso” for the time being: the psychology student completes an Erasmus -Semester abroad – we wish you a lot of happiness and great experiences!
Science is for everyone
“Science lives out of dialogue with society”, emphasizes the science minister Eva-Maria Holzleitner, who sees science communication as an essential part of research: “It is not enough to only investigate and publish for the experts! We must make research accessible to everyone in an innovative and exciting way.”
New media and formats offer good opportunities for this: “We also have to experiment so much as in research itself in science communication.”
Fight against hostility to science
Minister of Education Christoph Return also finds “Fäkt!” The “modern, practical and refreshing access to the knowledge transfer for students” great.
President Heinz Faßmann is pleased to encourage the science, education sector and especially the children, students and adolescents. Faßmann considers it “important in the fight against hostility to the knowledge that such formats of science transfer are still sufficiently financed”.
Knowledge for the next generation
The idea of the project originally came from the scientist Andreas Berthal from the Meduni Vienna and the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CEMM) of the Öaw.
“I think it is important to bring the world of research closer to the next generation,” the researcher said in the beginning a year ago – see also video below. “The potential of the children is incredibly large and wants to be awakened and encouraged.”
He knows from his daily work: “Spraying young people with questions and curiosity. They are easy to inspire for difficult questions how they try to answer science.”
Surprise children with competence
Time and again the youth surprises the researcher: “The questions of children are sometimes uncompromising direct and logical.” That inspires him, because “that inspires me over and over again and also makes the paths and a certain tunnel view possible”.
We want to know if he has already improved by children. “It always happens,” Berthaler said: “Only last month did a ten years of girl corrected during a student seminar. I had explained the virus’s genome a bit simplified, but she knew this was not quite good.”
Well, maybe he will soon be “Fäkt!” Soon to clarify considerably more children – at least the project has the potential.
