Chimpanzees wipes their ass after the toilet, offer each other their wounds and even clean themselves after sex. Researchers from the University of Oxford have now discovered.
In the East African Budongo -forest, researchers have observed various chimpanzees who cleaned their genitals after linking with leaves. A woman wiped her ass after bowel movements. This can protect against infections and thus serve health, says study -author Elodie Freymann in a broadcast at the University of Oxford.
“We humans like to think we are unique in many ways. And I think we thought for a long time that health care was one of these special functions,” says Freymann, the newspaper “The Guardian”.
Chimpanzees take care of their wounds
But that’s not true. Because the chimpanzees were also observed in wound care. They were mainly wounds because of human traps and fights. The primates licked the wounds, pressed their fingers on the injuries, pressed leaves and laid chewed plants on the wounds.
“This behavior supports proof of other places that apparently recognize chimpanzees the need or suffering from others and consciously take measures to alleviate this, even if they do not have a direct genetic advantage,” Freymann explains.
Other studies also show that
Incidentally, the researchers from the University of Oxford are not the first to find out that large monkeys maintain themselves. Earlier studies showed that chimpanzees use insects to treat their wounds and to use Orangoutans known medicinal plants for injuries.
