The unemployment rate falls to 7.4% in the second quarter of 2023 in the Basque Country

The number of unemployed is estimated at 77,600 this quarter and the number of people in work at 971,600, 1.1% more than in the first quarter of 2023. Employment is rising in all sectors except manufacturing.

The unemployment rate decreased in the Basque Autonomous Community in the second quarter of 2023 to 7.4% according to data from the Basque Institute of Statistics, Eustat. In concrete terms, it is 1.3 percentage points lower than in the first quarter of 2023.

The unemployment rate for women fell by 1.7 percentage points to 7.6% and the unemployment rate for men stood at 7.2% (-1.1 percentage points).

The number of unemployed includes people seeking work, actively seeking and also available for work. It is estimated that there are 77,600 this second quarter people unemployed, 14,500 less than the previous quarter.

The data from Eustat also shows that there were at the end of June 10,800 more people in work that in the first trimester; a total of 971,600 people.

Breaking down the data by territories In historical figures, compared to the previous quarter, employment increased by 8,900 people in Bizkaia and 2,200 in Gipuzkoa, while it fell by 300 people in Álava. The largest increase is in women (+7,600), in men with 3,200.

The occupancy rate It is calculated taking into account the percentage of working people between the ages of 16 and 64, out of the total population of those ages. In this second quarter it is in the 70.1%one percentage point from the previous one.

Low employment in industry

All sectors have seen an increase in employment, except industry, where it has fallen by 800 people (-0.4%). In the services sector it has increased by 8,600 employees (+1.2%), in construction by 2,500 people (+4.6%) and in the primary sector by 500 (+6.1%).

With regard to the modality of hiring salaried people, those who have permanent contracts have increased compared to the previous quarter by 11,100 and compared to the previous year by 51,400 persons.
