At least six civilians were killed in Russian rocket attacks on a residential building in Chasiv Yar on Saturday evening. At least five other people were injured, the governor of the Donetsk region said. The search is currently underway for those who are buried.
“There are at least three dozen people in the ruins,” said Pavlo Kyrylenko, governor of the Donetsk region. Rescue work is currently underway and emergency services have already been able to contact two victims. The night before, a five-storey house was shelled by Russian Uragan missiles. So far, six people have been killed and five injured.
Russian Defense Ministry admits attack
The Russian Defense Ministry itself reported on Saturday that Chasiv Yar had been shelled. However, it is repeatedly emphasized that no shooting at civilian objects is allowed. Now that Russian troops have taken over the Luhansk region, they are increasingly concentrating on the Donetsk region. The goal is to control the entire Donbass.
No military intervention to protect civilians
To prevent the loss of further parts of the country and regain lost areas, the Ukrainian army needs heavy weapons from the West, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) regretted that the West could not intervene militarily to protect civilians in the war. “For example, I would have gladly promised that we would guarantee humanitarian corridors from the disputed areas in Ukraine. But we can’t afford that. Such a promise should be fulfilled militarily,” Baerbock told Der Spiegel. Negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin are currently not possible. “It’s about destruction, even of children.”
