Nord Stream maintenance – “July 21 is a critical date for all of Europe”

Date:

Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) fears that with the maintenance of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, less gas will flow to Austria from Monday. This also has consequences for the filling of household gas storage facilities. Nevertheless, the federal government’s storage target can still be met if Russia supplies natural gas in the agreed volume after the maintenance, the minister said on Sunday, who also called a “critical date”.

The critical moment is the planned restart of the pipeline, which is scheduled for July 21. “No one can predict today whether deliveries will fully resume after that. July 21 is therefore a critical date for gas supplies across Europe,” Gewessler emphasized.

Nord Stream 1 plays only a minor role for direct gas supplies to Austria. “Austria is mainly supplied through the pipeline system via Ukraine. Nevertheless, due to the complete failure of deliveries via Nord Stream 1 due to the maintenance work, a significant drop in deliveries is also expected in Austria,” according to the Gewessler division.

E-Control: Power supply is assured
For Austria, the 10-day supply interruption also means less natural gas from Russia, the regulatory agency E-Control announced on Friday. The filling of the gas storage will therefore be lower than in recent weeks and extractions may also take place. The current provision is assured, it is said.

The maintenance, which usually receives little attention, is causing a lot of nervousness in Europe this year, as many fear that Russian President Vladimir Putin will no longer allow the pipeline to be put into operation after the ten-day maintenance.

Government in Berlin welcomes the release of the turbine
The German government on Sunday welcomed Canada’s export license for repaired turbines for the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline. “We welcome the decision of our Canadian friends and allies,” said a government spokesman. The Canadian government on Saturday issued a temporary special permit for the export, which was necessary because of sanctions against Russia as a result of the war in Ukraine.
