Gastronomy in the foreground – the Austrians are so generous during the tip

Almost three -quarters of the Austrians “often” tip, about a quarter “occasionally” and only 2 percent “not at all”. This is the result of a study by the Hotel Association (ÖHV) with 1,000 respondents.

The amount is different: about a quarter of the respondents pay a good 10 percent in the bill, with almost another quarter it is 5 percent and a fifth makes it depends on the specific service.

Gastronomy at the front of the point
The Austrians were also asked where they give a tip: 87 percent in the catering trade, 63 percent in hairstyles and cosmetic salons, 48 ​​percent in hotels and 47 percent in delivery services. With 38 percent, the vessel completes the “Big Five” during tilting.

Discussion about taxes
In some industries, tips are an essential part of wages. This is especially true for gastronomy, but also to taxi drivers or hairdressers. Against this background, a debate broke out after the media had reported to the corresponding taxes of some high additional claims from the Austrian health insurance fund (ÖGK). In principle, tips are subject to social security contributions. The Ögk denied itself to focus on drinking money during the audits.

In many cases, the taxes are inserted on tips via a fixed rate – however, this may differ, depending on the industry and the federal state. For waiters in Vienna, for example, it is around 60 euros per month. Everything above is subject to full social security obligation.

According to the survey, the Austrians receive a clear position: a good 80 percent is for the abolition of contributions, only 17 percent would argue a moderate increase. Many also influence the subject itself: 39 percent of the respondents stated that they regularly receive tips on their professional activity.
