A Millstätter campsite manager in Carinthia is despairing of the holidaymakers’ payment behavior – and therefore reaches for the postcard.
Postcards are actually nice holiday greetings for those at home. However, a German family could be less happy about this. Every week she receives a postcard from her former vacation spot on Lake Millstatt, and the Germans are slowly going crazy.
Memories and letters from lawyers without success
The couple spent three weeks with their two children at the Burgstaller campsite on Lake Millstätter See in the summer of 2021 and then fled without paying the cost of their stay. After three reminders and two letters from a lawyer were unsuccessful and a lawsuit filed months ago in the court of Spittal has not yet been settled, camping manager Arndt Burgstaller is now trying another way.
Action already started
Every week a postcard arrives at the post office in the northern German municipality of Hohenheim, addressed “An den Zechpreller”. In a sarcastic manner, he is asked to pay, combined with the threat of exposing him completely with more cards. The campsite manager started this controversial action 20 years ago against a Dutchman who did not want to pay. “He paid after the first card,” Burgstaller says.
The German seems to be on a harder note, as the only response so far has been to call Burgstaller’s lawyer and threaten a lawsuit over data breaches on his part.
Payment behavior is declining
According to Burgstaller, the payment behavior of holidaymakers has generally decreased. “We have had no problems for the past twenty years. Last year, five left without paying. Four again this season. It seems to be a popular sport.”
