In the criminal trial for the Diesel affair, four former Volkswagen managers in Germany were guilty of fraud. The Wirtschaftsverkammer of the Regional Court of Braunschweig convicted two accused for several years in prison, two former employees received probation period fines.
The scandal for manipulation in diesel cars exhaust guests was blown up in September 2015. In the United States, the German car manufacturer had recently granted false test results. A few days later CEO Winterkorn resigned. As a result of one of the biggest crises, VW said that the group has cost around 33 billion euros so far.
With the judgment, a huge procedure comes to an end after almost four years. While the defendants are convicted from the researchers’ point of view, the men defend themselves and see themselves as a farmer’s victim. The public prosecutor had asked for two and four years in prison and only considered conditionally in one case. The defense, on the other hand, argued three acquittal and a warning.
Further procedures in the diesel scandal
The judgment is not final and the legal processing was not even terminated after this judgment. In Braunschweig, after the first trial and the complex against Winterkorn, four further criminal proceedings are open to a total of 31 accused, as spokesperson for the regional court said.
Leave the winter grain open
Originally it was planned that the former Volkswagen group boss Martin Winterkorn will sit on the dock. However, his process section was separated before the start in September 2021 for health reasons. In the meantime, Winterkorn gave up both as a witness and as a defendant and pointed to the responsibility for the diesel scandal.
An accident with a stay in the clinic interrupted the trial against the most prominent suspect. It is completely open whether and when the procedure can be continued against the now 78-year-old.
